This comic is dedicated to the
real Jackie, as well as Janna, Ela, David, and all the other people
I know who have recently convocated (I have forgotten who you are).
I'm sure they can guess why. |

Panel 1: In
the title panel of this Sunday-style colour comic, Jackie looks
ruefully at a sign reading "West of Bathurst," with a little "by Kari
Maaren" crammed in there too. Below it on the pole is another sign: "No
Irresponsibility Beyond This Point." Panel 2: In the Davies College common room, Marie approaches Jackie, who is sitting on a couch, staring into space. Marie: Jackie? You look kind of stunned. Jackie: I...I know. Panel 3: Marie sits down beside Jackie. Jackie: I convocated a few weeks ago. I was fine then...but today I was updating my CV, and it all just hit me. Panel 4: Jackie: I'm not a student any more! I've switched categories! It's terrifying! Panel 5: Jackie: Behind me lie the comforting pain, drudgery, and abuse of school; ahead of me are the unknown horrors of adulthood. I'm not ready. I don't want to grow up! Panel 6: Marie: How old are you? Jackie: Twenty-eight. Panel 7: Marie: Yeesh...that's way too young. Jackie: Rahim's nearly thirty-five and still in grad school. Why can't I be like him? Alt-Text: It's a big scary world out there. I once wrote a song with that title. It was about grad school. Who's surprised? Now I am writing songs about murder. (They are for a PLAY about murder, so please don't call the cops.) I have a strange life. Go to commentary |
